The National Ready Mixed Concrete Association (NRMCA) traces most concrete cracking to design and construction: isolation and contraction joints left out, a poorly prepared subgrade, concrete mixed too wet, poor finishing, fast drying and little or no curing. It wants the subgrade under a slab compacted and sloped for drainage, and lists settlement cracks among the common forms.
Joints that decide where it cracks
Joints let a slab crack where it is meant to. NRMCA uses isolation, or expansion, joints to separate a slab from walls, footings and other fixed points so each part can move on its own, and spaces contraction joints no more than 24 to 36 times the slab's thickness, 15 feet at most. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code asks for deck joints that keep visible cracking inside the control joints, and for a joint wherever a deck meets existing concrete, so relative movement can't damage the pool. Mortex makes a PVC control joint for pool decks with side fins that stop water running freely to the soil, and a replacement top that fits over existing joints to repair them or change their color.

Sealing a deck joint
W. R. Meadows makes DECK-O-SEAL, a two-part, pourable polysulfide sealant for pool decks and other concrete that moves. Its rules: clean, dry joints in fully cured concrete, with 28 days cited as the industry standard for curing; a foam backer rod to set the depth; a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio with the sealant 1/4 to 1/2 inch deep; no use in joints narrower than 1/4 inch; and at least 10 minutes of mixing. It sets firm and rubbery within about 24 hours at 77°F, needs 24 hours before rain, isn't painted over and can't be used under water, where the maker's DECK-O-SEAL 125 or Gun Grade goes instead. Sika's self-leveling polyurethane sealants follow the same 2:1 design over backer rod or bond-breaker tape, need a primer where a joint will be fully submerged, and list 5 ppm as their maximum chlorine exposure.
Replacing failed sealant
W. R. Meadows' care bulletin separates two failures. If the sealant is damaged but still bonded, the damaged section is cut out and refilled; if the bond itself has gone, all of the old sealant comes out. A knife runs down each side against the concrete, the remains are wire-brushed or ground off, and the joint walls are wiped with alcohol just before new sealant goes in. The bulletin also notes that heavy shock treatments can leave a temporary white chalking on the sealant.

The joint that matters most runs between the deck and the coping. The pool code wants it watertight and built so the deck's movement can't reach the coping or its mortar bed, and loose or cracked coping along it is pool coping repair and replacement.

How can I repair a hairline crack on my pool deck?
Often it needs no structural repair. NRMCA says most random cracks that appear early are unsightly but rarely affect concrete's structural integrity or service life. SUNDEK, a deck-coating maker, treats hairline and shrinkage cracks as needing no extra treatment before its coating, fills most wider cracks with urethane, and offers grinding cracks open into a deliberate scoreline pattern as an alternative. Joint sealant isn't made for hairlines: W. R. Meadows says DECK-O-SEAL shouldn't go in joints narrower than 1/4 inch. A crack that keeps widening, or leaves one side higher than the other, is a different matter.
Is a cracked pool deck a trip hazard?
It can become one when the concrete on either side of a crack or joint ends up at different heights. The pool code limits the height difference between a pool deck and an adjoining sidewalk to 1/4 inch and the open gap between them, joint material included, to 3/4 inch, and wants deck edges radiused or tapered with no sharp corners. Steps in a residential pool deck need uniform risers no taller than 7-1/2 inches and treads at least 10 inches deep.
Can pool deck joints be sealed in Texas summer heat?
Within the sealant maker's limits. W. R. Meadows applies DECK-O-SEAL between 40°F and 122°F and says it sets firm within about 24 hours at 77°F, taking longer when it is cooler. Camp Mabry, Austin's official climate station, has normal highs of 96.6°F in July and 97.8°F in August (1991–2020 normals), well under that ceiling for air temperature. A coating laid over the repaired deck afterward may have tighter limits of its own.
Does pool deck repair need City or HOA approval in Leander?
