Resealing the joint between coping and deck
The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which Leander has adopted, requires the joint where coping meets a concrete deck to be watertight and built to protect the coping and its mortar bed from the deck's expected movement. Belgard puts foam expansion material between the coping and deck pavers to protect the bond seam, and Unilock uses grout or a flexible sealant at the joints. The flexible joint has to run the full depth of the deck and be maintained to keep working. Rebuilding the bond beam

How new coping is set
Dry-fit and corners first
Unilock's guide roughens (scarifies) the top of the concrete pool wall so the mortar and coping bond well, dry-fits and cuts every piece before setting, and builds all 90-degree corners first. Mitered corners look best, butt joints are easier, and a coined corner, a contrasting corner piece, saves the most cutting.
Adhesive, mortar bed and slope
Unilock bonds each piece with concrete adhesive between the coping and the pool wall and a bed of modified mortar, such as ARDEX X32 or X37 spread with a 1/4-inch notched trowel, under the rest of it; the mortar sets each piece's slope while the adhesive gives the installation its longevity. Sources disagree on the edge. Unilock overhangs the pool wall about 2 inches and slopes the coping 2 percent away from the pool, while Belgard keeps a consistent 1-inch overhang and sets paver coping level, because the deck carries the slope. Unilock leaves 1/4-inch joints filled with a flexible exterior tile grout, and keeps pieces on a curved pool to 18 inches or less so the edge flows instead of looking choppy.
