Polished pool finish types: marble, pebble and glass
Polished marble finishes
SGM's Durazzo is a pre-blended mix of natural marble aggregates and premium cement, polished with diamond disks once it is on the walls and floor for what SGM calls an ultra-smooth, glass-like surface. CL Industries' Hydrazzo combines white and colored marble aggregates, white Portland cement and graded color aggregates. CL says it resists spot etching, permanent scale and algae, and that complaints about roughness are virtually eliminated because the surface can be polished to an even luster.
Polished pebble and glass blends
NPT's PolishedScapes blends marble and glass aggregate and is polished with diamond abrasives; NPT calls it the smoothest of its finishes. Wet Edge Technologies hand-polishes the entire surface of its Primera Stone with diamond-grit pads, which it says brings out the color of the stones and the glass accents. Pebble Technology International buff-polishes PebbleBreeze, which pairs pebble with glass beads and shell, as the smooth end of a range otherwise covered under pebble pool finishes.
Glass bead finishes
Glass bead interiors are close relatives. NPT's JewelScapes is a glass bead finish that is smooth to the touch, and its Classic series is nothing but glass beads, white cement and colored pigment. Designer Concrete Coatings, the Australian maker of Designer Beadcrete, voids its warranty where the finish is under 8 mm thick, and Pebble Technology International notes that glass finishes typically need different exposure methods from pebble. Preparing an older pool
On a pool being refinished, CL Industries' Hydrazzo data sheet calls for undercutting the old surface at least 3 inches around all tile, return lines, light fixtures and main drains, then an approved scratch coat. Hydrazzo goes on when the temperature is above 40°F and rising and the air is at 60°F and rising, with at least one finish plasterer for every 300 square feet. CL's own documents differ on thickness: the data sheet allows up to 1 inch, while the application sheet sets 3/8 inch as the minimum and 3/4 inch as the maximum, warning that thicker material doesn't trowel well unless it is layered and that material laid too thin dries too fast and cracks or crazes.
Exposing and polishing
SGM cures Durazzo overnight and acid washes it the next morning, starting with a solution of half acid and half water. Polishing then runs walls first and floor last, so the crew isn't standing on a slick, wet floor: one light pass with a 70-grit diamond disk, and a second at 120 grit where needed in high-contact spots. CL exposes Hydrazzo the same day after at least 4 hours of cure in warm weather of 80°F and rising, or after an overnight cure, then polishes it with its water-driven Triton tool, run at 3,800 to 4,000 psi and kept away from the tile line so the diamonds don't scratch the tile. CL warns that metallic sanding discs or polishers driven by hydraulic oil can permanently ruin the curing of a cement finish.

Polished finishes, start-up and Leander water
The first year
CL Industries reminds installers that a cement finish takes up to a year to cure, so maintenance and operation stay critical for the first 10 to 12 months. The early curing that brings efflorescence up on dark finishes usually stops after 28 to 60 days, CL adds.
Hard fill water
The City of Leander's 2024 water report, the newest that lists hardness, gives 194 ppm of hardness, 156 ppm of total alkalinity and a pH of 8.2, where ppm means milligrams per liter. The U.S. Geological Survey classes water above 180 mg/L as very hard, though the City's report doesn't say its figure is measured on the same basis. The National Plasterers Council calls testing the fill water no longer optional: water low in pH, calcium hardness or alkalinity can etch a finish, water high in them can scale it, and dissolved metals such as copper and iron can stain it.
Stains on a glass or polished surface
Not every stain treatment suits these finishes. In a National Plasterers Council article on torching, a heat treatment for discolored plaster, glass bead surfaces can't safely be torched at all and pebble only very delicately. CL Industries leaves owners a used polishing pad for removing later stains or rough spots on Hydrazzo.

Published prices rarely list polished finishes on their own. National figures for 2025 put resurfacing with an aggregate finish, a cement-based plaster mixed with quartz, stones or glass beads, at $6,000 to $15,000 depending on the pool's size and the blend. National 2024 figures price Pebble Tec, PebbleSheen and BeadCrete at about $9,000 to $13,000 installed, and typical Dallas–Fort Worth figures for 2025 call glass bead aggregates a mid-range option at $8 to $12 per square foot.

How long does a polished pool finish last?
The National Plasterers Council rates polished finishes an 8 to 12 year surface, against 10 to 15 years for quartz pool finishes and 12 to 18 for pebble. Makers of polished and glass bead finishes give warranty terms rather than a service life in years: SGM's standard warranty on Durazzo runs 1 year, extended to 5 years on a residential pool registered with SGM. The Council also notes that constant contact with treated water changes how any finish looks over time, slowly in most pools.
Can a polished pool finish be re-polished?
The makers say so. NPT says PolishedScapes can be re-polished throughout its life to bring back its original luster, and calls polishing the most benign fix, one that can avoid patching or replastering. CL Industries says Hydrazzo can be acid washed and polished again if the start-up wasn't followed properly. No maker says how long a polish lasts or how often it needs redoing, so Leander Pool Resurfacing can look at the surface and talk through whether polishing would help.
Is a polished pool finish slippery?
Not by the makers' accounts. CL Industries calls its polished marble silky smooth yet non-slip, and Designer Concrete Coatings describes Beadcrete's texture as slip resistant but not coarse, with a low risk of skin abrasion. Smoothness is the point: CL says the more polished the finish, the smoother it feels. The slick moment comes during installation, which is why SGM has crews polish the walls before the floor.
How soon is a pool filled after a polished finish goes on?
It depends on the product. SGM acid washes and polishes Durazzo the morning after it goes on. Designer Concrete Coatings waits for a hard set, at least 24 to 48 hours after the work is finished, before Beadcrete's final acid wash, and never puts acid on a dry, green surface. Pebble Technology International keeps its smoother PebbleFina and PebbleBreeze surfaces evenly dry until the fill, with plumbing lines drained or plugged so nothing drips onto them. After that, the National Plasterers Council wants a new finish fully underwater as soon as practical.
Can a polished finish go in a spa?
Yes. CL Industries says its polished marble is popular for entertainment pools and spas, and SGM's Durazzo instructions call for a second, finer 120-grit pass in high-contact areas such as spas and swim-outs. CL polishes the tight spots by hand with a pad: inside corners of steps, bench seats, swim-outs and the area around light niches.
