Pool Skimmer Replacement in Leander, TX

Leander Pool Resurfacing handles pool skimmer repair and replacement in Leander, Texas: cracked skimmer bodies and lids, leaks where the skimmer meets the pool, worn weir doors, and old skimmers still plumbed with an equalizer line. The International Swimming Pool and Spa Code requires every permanent in-ground residential pool to have either a surface skimming system or a perimeter overflow system, so a pool without a perimeter overflow relies on its skimmers to meet the code.

Cracked pool skimmer exposed with the deck cut back for replacement

How a skimmer works and what goes wrong

The parts of an in-ground skimmer

CMP, a skimmer maker, describes its in-ground skimmer as a body, a collar and lid at deck level, a weir door, a debris basket and, on some models, a float valve. The collar has a friction fit that slides up or down, and extension collars stack to meet a taller deck. Below, two 2-inch ports carry the plumbing: the rear one connects to the pump suction, the front one may serve as an equalizer line or run to the main drain, and an unused port is plugged. The collar and lid sit at deck level along the pool's edge, where the coping separates the shell from the surrounding deck; work on that edge is pool coping replacement.

Signs a skimmer is failing

Cracks are the plainest sign, and CMP warns against using a cracked or damaged skimmer or stepping on a cracked skimmer plate. Water loss is the other. The EPA lists the connection between pool and pipe and the pool's edges among the places pools leak, and air bubbles in the pump strainer among the signs of a leak; finding where the water goes is pool leak repair. A crack that runs on from the skimmer into the concrete of the shell is pool crack repair.

What the maker and the code require of a skimmer

Setting a skimmer in a concrete pool

CMP's manual, written for building a pool, wants a skimmer formed into a concrete shell to be surrounded by at least 4 inches of structural concrete in a monolithic pour and tied to the pool's rebar cage at points on top of the skimmer. Because building codes vary, it tells installers to check the local code before installing the pool and skimmer. Leander has adopted the 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code.

How many skimmers a pool needs

Where skimmers are a pool's only overflow system, that code calls for at least one per 800 square feet of surface on a residential pool, one per 500 on a public pool and one per 150 on a spa, placed to keep the skimming effective. CMP's manual asks for one skimmer per 500 square feet of pool surface. The code also wants the skimming system designed to handle 100 percent of the circulation turnover rate, with a cleanable strainer, basket or screen ahead of the pump.

Equalizer lines

The code prohibits equalizers on skimmers and requires skimming devices to be designed and installed so they don't create a hazard to swimmers. CMP's manual carries a danger warning to plug the equalizer line with NSF-listed PVC cement, because equalizer fittings can trap hair or body parts and cause severe injury or death. At public pools, the Consumer Product Safety Commission's drain-cover checklist includes the covers on skimmer equalizer lines.

  • One skimmer per 800 sq ft, residential (ISPSC)
  • One per 500 sq ft (CMP manual)
  • At least 4 in. of structural concrete around it (CMP)
  • No equalizers on skimmers (ISPSC)

Bonding and wiring at the skimmer

Bonding the pool water

CMP notes that since 2008 the National Electrical Code has required the pool water itself to be bonded, not only the metal in the pool's structure, and that this is usually done at the light. For pools with nicheless LED lights, CMP makes a water-bonded skimmer whose bonding plate stays in contact with the water even when the pump is off. Its manual describes at least 9 square inches of conductive material, as NEC 680.26(C) requires, with a copper wire run to the pool's bonding grid or loop. Leander requires electrical systems to be installed under the 2023 National Electrical Code and its local amendments.

Who does the electrical and plumbing parts

Texas requires anyone doing non-exempt electrical work to hold a license and to work through a licensed electrical contractor. Plumbing is less settled. The state's plumbing law defines plumbing broadly enough to take in piping that recirculates water, yet the chapter never names swimming pools or spas, so whether a skimmer's suction line counts is a question for the City's code official or the Texas State Board of Plumbing Examiners.

Skimmers at HOA and apartment pools

Texas treats HOA, apartment, condominium and hotel pools as public pools, and the code's count for them is one skimmer per 500 square feet of surface where skimmers are the only overflow system. The state rules keep a public pool's water inside the operating range of its rim, gutter or skimmer system and close the pool when the level drops below it. The CDC's Model Aquatic Health Code, a model code rather than Texas law, keeps the water near the middle of the skimmer openings, wants weirs in place and working at all times, and has broken or missing weirs replaced immediately. We take estimate requests from HOA boards and property managers as well as homeowners.

Pool skimmer replacement cost

National figures for 2026 put a professional skimmer replacement at $1,200 or more when the old skimmer is too damaged to repair, and a national remodeling figure from 2025 puts replacing an in-ground skimmer at $1,500 to $3,000, and a second national 2025 figure gives the same range. Repairs that leave the body in place cost far less, as the questions below show.

Pool skimmer questions

How much does it cost to repair a pool skimmer?

Usually far less than a replacement. Typical Austin-area figures for 2026 put a skimmer repair at $50 to $295, against $50 to $300 nationally, with a national 2025 average of $175. A national 2025 guide names broken baskets and covers as the common problems behind those repairs. Leander Pool Resurfacing estimates skimmer repairs for free.

How can I repair my inground pool skimmer?

Some repairs are simple parts. CMP's maintenance list says to check the weir door now and then for free movement and to replace it if it is damaged or worn, and to empty the basket as needed. Before tightening anything, note CMP's warning that overtightened plugs in the skimmer ports can crack the plug or the skimmer body, and its advice to keep the pipes supported on undisturbed earth so the ports aren't stressed. A cracked body is a bigger job: CMP warns against using a cracked or damaged skimmer, and in a concrete pool the body is cast into the shell's concrete.

My pool skimmer is leaking. How can I fix it?

Find the leak first. The EPA's bucket test tells a leak from evaporation, and a leak at the skimmer can be in the body, at a seal or where the ports meet the pipe. National 2026 figures put fixing a leak around the skimmer at $100 to $130, and a national 2025 guide at $100 to $150. When the skimmer is too damaged to repair, the same 2026 figures put a professional replacement at $1,200 or more.

How high should the water be in a skimmer?

CMP says to keep the pool's water at least 2 inches above the bottom of the skimmer's mouth. If the level drops below the mouth, or the basket clogs so no water can get through, its float valve closes the skimmer so the pump doesn't run dry. The code sets the level at the build: the design waterline has to be within plus or minus 1/4 inch at completion on pools with adjustable-weir skimmers, and plus or minus 1/8 inch where the skimming system can't be adjusted, such as gutters.

Does replacing a pool skimmer need a permit in Leander?

Ask the City first. Leander requires a permit before any construction inside the city limits, its permit list includes swimming pools and remodels that involve electrical, mechanical or plumbing work, and it says the list isn't complete and asks owners to confirm with a building inspector. A skimmer connects to the pool's suction plumbing and, on some pools, to its bonding. Where state-licensed work is involved, the license goes in with the permit application. Leander Development Services, at 201 N Brushy Street, answers permit questions; outside the city limits but inside its extraterritorial jurisdiction, the City currently requires permits only for signs and water or wastewater connections.
