Pool Leak Repair in Leander, TX
Leander Pool Resurfacing handles pool leak repair in Leander, Texas: leaks in the shell and around fittings, at the skimmer and main drain, along the pool's edges and in the plumbing between the pool and its equipment. The EPA's WaterSense program counts evaporation, cleaning, leaks and splashing among the ways a pool uses water, so a repair starts by telling a real leak from ordinary loss.

Leak or evaporation: reading a pool's water loss
The EPA's bucket test
The test needs a day without rain or heavy wind. Turn off everything that runs or adds water, including the filter, the cleaner and any automatic fill, and keep the pool closed for 24 hours. Fill a 2.5- to 5-gallon bucket to about an inch below its rim, stand it on a step with at least two-thirds of it under water, and mark the water line inside the bucket and the pool's level outside it. A day later, compare the two drops: when the pool has fallen further than the bucket, the EPA says the pool may have a leak.
How much loss points to a leak
The EPA's rule of thumb is that a pool losing more than 2 inches a week, or more than 3 inches in hot, dry places where evaporation runs high, likely has a leak. It also warns that small leaks can quickly turn into big ones when nobody deals with them.

The shell under the finish
Plaster doesn't hold the water in. The American Shotcrete Association expects a well-built shotcrete shell to be watertight before any finish goes on, and an article in its magazine reports the National Plasterers Council's view that plaster is no waterproofing coating: water that gets through the plaster passes more easily through a porous shell. The Association knows of no water-loss standard written for pools and points instead to ACI 350.1-10, which allows open liquid-containment structures to lose 0.05 percent of their volume per day over a 72-hour test, after 3 days of filling and saturation. Asked about one shell that failed a watertightness test, the Association pointed to how the shotcrete was placed, such as sand pockets, overspray and rebound, and suggested taking cores for petrographic analysis. A crack that carries water through the shell is pool crack repair.
Skimmers, drains and their covers
A skimmer is one of the places where pipe meets pool. CMP, a skimmer maker, warns against using one that is cracked or damaged, and replacing it is pool skimmer replacement. At the main drain, Pentair says covers should be inspected regularly and replaced when cracked, broken or past the design lifetime marked on them, and CMP rates its Galaxy drain cover and screws for seven years and says missing, broken or cracked suction fittings must be replaced.
Vanishing edges
Walls with water on one side and an evaporating surface on the other need waterproofing of their own. The American Shotcrete Association names negative-edge pool walls among them and says constant one-way water movement leaches calcium and can badly deteriorate the structure over time; that work is infinity edge pool repair.

Sealing leaks at fittings and in the shell
Before a finish goes on, SGM's plastering manual requires any water seeping through the shell under groundwater pressure, what SGM calls weepers, to be stopped with hydraulic cement, plugging the leaks and sealing around fittings. For a small hole in a shotcrete wall, the American Shotcrete Association describes pressure washing at 3,000 psi or more, hand-patching with a nonshrink hydraulic cement of at least 4,000 psi 28-day strength, and roughening the patch so the plaster grips it. Where water is still moving, Prime Resins says the choice starts with whether a crack weeps or gushes: a low-viscosity resin that penetrates for a weeping hairline, a fast reaction or set for a gushing one. Its Prime Flex 900 XLV is a water-activated polyurethane pumped under pressure into actively leaking joints and cracks, where it expands into a closed-cell watertight foam.
Pipes and the pressure test
The code tests circulation piping with water, and never with air when the pipe is plastic. The 2021 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code, which Leander has adopted, requires circulation piping, other than piping built into the pool itself, to hold a hydrostatic test of 25 psi for at least 15 minutes. Makeup and drainage piping follows the International Plumbing Code.
Drains and suction lines
Opening up a main drain or suction line brings in the code's entrapment rules: suction entrapment avoidance under ANSI/PHTA/ICC 7, and suction outlet fittings listed and labeled to APSP 16. The same code asks for every pool to be kept clean, sanitary and in good repair.
Water behind the shell
Leaks outside the pool count too. Water pooling against the back of the shell, the National Plasterers Council warns, can create back pressure strong enough to debond a bond coat or the finish, and it names seasonal rain and leaking irrigation piping as sources.

Permits, licenses and water rules in Leander
Plumbing and electrical work
Texas's Plumbing License Law counts piping that supplies, circulates or recirculates water as plumbing and says no one may do plumbing without the proper license, but it never mentions pools, so whether a given pool-pipe repair needs a licensed plumber is a question for the local code official. An owner needs no plumbing license for work in their own homestead. Electrical work is clearer: anyone who does non-exempt electrical work in Texas must be licensed and work through a licensed electrical contractor. Leander requires a permit before construction inside the city limits, lists remodels with plumbing or electrical work among the jobs that need one, and asks owners to confirm with a building inspector before work starts.
Topping up under the City's water phases
Leander's base Phase 1 rules, in force year-round, ban water waste, and for a leak whose water runs off or collects in a street, gutter or parking lot, the code allows no more than ten days from a notice about the leak to repair it. As of October 1, 2026, the City is in Phase 2 Water Conservation, which bans nonessential water use but allows adding water to a pool where that keeps the purification system running or the pool structurally sound. Since mid-2023 the City has gone above Phase 2 at least four times, each for work or failures at the regional treatment plant or its pipeline, and twice reached Phase 4, when filling pools with City water was restricted. Confirm the current phase with the City before a leaking pool is drained for repair.
Buried pipe in Leander's ground
CMP's skimmer manual wants pool piping supported on undisturbed earth so the connections aren't stressed. Leander's ground varies. At the city's Census center point the USDA soil map shows Denton silty clay, whose severe shrink-swell potential the 1983 county soil survey says affects the stability of foundations, streets and buried utility lines, while beside the Leander Public Library the rock is hard, fractured limestone about 11 inches below the surface.

(737) 212-9378Pool leak repair cost
Typical Austin-area figures for 2026 put leak repair anywhere from $10 to $3,440 and drain repair at $395 to $690, and another typical Austin-area figure from the same year puts leak repairs at $500 to $1,500, depending on how severe the leak is and whether it is in the plumbing, a fitting or the shell. National 2026 figures put an in-ground leak repair at $350 to $2,700 for labor and materials, before draining, refilling and treating the water, and a national 2025 guide puts patching a pinhole leak at as little as $10.
Draining adds a refill. By our calculation from Leander's in-city water rates, 15,000 to 20,000 gallons of refill water would bill at $68.25 to $140.00 before the monthly customer charge, depending on the home's other water use that month. (737) 212-9378Pool leak repair questions
Where is the most common place for a pool leak to occur?
No industry body ranks them. The EPA's pool guide lists six places leaks are found: the liner, the pump seal, the piping, the connection between pool and pipe, the pool's edges and the pipe joints. At the skimmer, one of those pool-to-pipe connections, CMP's manual warns that port plugs tightened too hard can crack the plug or the skimmer body. Leander Pool Resurfacing gives free estimates on leak repairs of every size.
What is the easiest way to find a leak in a pool?
The bucket test above is the simplest, and the same EPA guide adds two more checks. Once every three months, switch the automatic fill off for 24 hours to test for leaks, since a faulty fill valve can also send water to the overflow drain. And look for wet spots around the pool, or air bubbles in the return line or the pump strainer. Leander adds a yearly backflow test for pools with automatic fillers, which its hazard list rates high on a 12-month cycle; the City notifies owners when one is due.
How much does it cost to detect a leak in a pool?
Typical Austin-area figures for 2026 put professional leak detection at $100 to $495, close to the national 2026 range of $100 to $500, and some pros include minor leak patching in that price. A national 2025 range runs wider, from $100 to $1,000, depending on the pool, the detection method and the source of the leak. One Central Texas leak company's own price list (undated) starts at $650 for a pool with a single pump and $750 for a pool and spa, with commercial pools from $750 and repairs quoted separately.
Can you fix a pool leak without draining?
Sometimes. Hydraulic cements and water-activated resins are made to stop water that is still running, as the repair section above describes, but a national 2025 cost guide says leak repair often involves draining the water, patching or fixing the leak, and refilling the pool. River Pools, a fiberglass pool maker, warns that groundwater pushes up on a shell that holds too little water, enough to bulge, crack or even float it, says the same applies to concrete pools, and advises owners not to drain a pool themselves. In Leander, Phase 2 allows adding water to keep a pool structurally sound, but the code doesn't say whether a full refill counts, so ask the City before the water comes out.
How much water does a pool lose to evaporation in Leander?
No source measures it for pools, but the nearest figures are high. The Texas Water Development Board's lake-evaporation totals for the one-degree block that contains Leander ran from 40.68 inches in 2021 to 54.16 inches in 2017, with 47.76 inches in 2025 and a single-month peak of 11.57 inches in July 2022. Austin's official climate station at Camp Mabry averages 28.7 days a year at 100°F or above (1991–2020 normals). Those are open-lake figures, so the bucket on the step is still the way to compare a pool against its own evaporation.
