Preparing the old shotcrete
The American Shotcrete Association says that with proper surface preparation, materials and placement, the joint between new and old shotcrete acts monolithically instead of as a cold joint. Where new meets old, the surface has to be clean and free of laitance, the weak film on top, either cleaned while still green on the first day or later by water blasting, sandblasting or wire brushing, with all gloss removed and the joint dampened. The Association also says the success of shotcrete overlays and patches depends heavily on the quality of that preparation.
The new concrete and its cure
For dry-mix shotcrete, or gunite, the Association recommends a minimum 28-day compressive strength of 4,000 psi and an ACI-certified nozzleman. Shotcrete placed in layers doesn't create cold joints when each hardened layer is cleaned of loose material, overspray and laitance first, because the high-velocity impact bonds it to what is already there. After placement, at least 7 days of curing helps control shrinkage, and young concrete left uncured in windy, hot or dry weather is more likely to shrink and crack.

What is the tanning ledge in a pool called?
It goes by several names. Can a tanning ledge be added to an existing pool?
Yes, by building onto the shell. A Dallas–Fort Worth builder describes the retrofit as draining the pool completely, excavating beside the existing shell, adding new concrete and often re-routing the plumbing and filtration.
